Abstract

Background: Numerous factors contribute to sleep deprivation, ranging from lifestyle and environmental factors to sleep disorders and other medical conditions, which contribute to short- and long-term health consequences. Various parts of Phoenix dactylifera (date palm) are used in traditional medicine to treat various disorders such as memory disturbances, loss of consciousness, and nervous disorders. Thus, the study aimed to assess the neuroprotective effect of aqueous fruit extract of Phoenix dactylifera (AEPD) on the cerebellum following sleep deprivation in Wistar rats.

Method: Twenty male Wistar rats were divided into four (4) groups of five animals each. Group A (control) was administered distilled water (1ml/kg), while group B was exposed to Sleep deprivation for 18 hours. Group C was exposed to Sleep deprivation for 18 hours following administration of 500 mg/kg body weight of AEPD, and group D was exposed to Sleep deprivation for 18 hours following administration of 1000 mg/kg body weight of AEPD

Results: AEPD-treated rats following sleep deprivation show a significant (P ≤ 0.05) increase in the frequency of line crossing when compared to the sleep deprivation group, but there was no significant difference in grooming and defecation compared to the control group. Histological features in the sleep-deprived rats showed a degenerated cerebellar cortex, while treatment with both 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg following sleep deprivation described a restored histoarchitecture compared to the severely distorted sleep-deprived rat.

Conclusion: The results demonstrate that AEPD exerts neuroprotective effects following sleep deprivation, attributable to its constituent antioxidant properties. These findings confirm its effectiveness and highlight its contribution to maintaining brain health.
